Sunflower Pilot Project
The CIUSSS de L’Estrie CHUS has launched a pilot project in support of English-speaking users in the local health service networks of la Pommeraie and Memphrémagog. It’s called the Sunflower Initiative.
The Sunflower Initiative is meant to to improve the quality of care provided to English-speakers seeking health services by having staff voluntarily wear a sunflower visual. This lets people know that they are readily available to communicate in English.
Hong Kong National Rowing Team

Raccon Rabies Vaccination Operations
An increase in the number of racoon rabies cases reported in Vermont close to the Quebec border has led the Ministry of Environment to conduct wild animal vaccination operations in the Estrie and Montérégie regions
The vaccination campaign is running Aug. 7-24 in order limit the risk of the disease being reintroduced in the province.

Boat Washing
The Town of Brome Lake passed a notice of motion at the April council meeting to adopt a new bylaw for boat washing to help avoid the introduction of invasive species in Lake Brome and to preserve the quality of water.

Contraband and unauthorized items were seized at the Cowansville Institution following the intervention of staff after a routine patrol around the perimeter of the medium security federal facility on April 11.
Investment in the Trades
At a press conference at the Robitaille grain mill in Farnham on April 18, Minister of Canadian Heritage and MP for Brome-Missisquoi Pascale St-Onge announced a $90 million dollar investment in the Apprenticeship Service and a $10 million investment in the Skilled Trades Awareness and Readiness Program with the primary goal of attracting more skilled workers to the construction industry.
Fundraiser marking World Autism Month
April marks World Autism Month, and the owner of a local hair salon is organizing a fundraiser to raise awareness around the different programs and services in Brome-Missisquoi that support individuals on the autism spectrum.
Tonya Harvey, owner of Coiffure Spectrum, told CIDI that she started the fundraiser around five years ago to bring attention to her specialized services for individuals on the autism spectrum – and with other disabilities like down syndrome – after recognizing a need in Brome-Missisquoi.
Earth Day
Citizen’s group and non-profit organization Solidarité Environnement Sutton (SES) is organizing an event in honour of Earth Day to demand investments and concrete measures to develop sustainable transportation options in Brome-Missisquoi.
SES member Linda Boisclair told CIDI that in the face of a climate crisis, and with an increase in population in Brome-Missisquoi, there is a need to invest in public, collective, and active transportation.
National Volunteer Week
It’s National Volunteer Week (April 14-20) and non-profit organizations and members of community groups in Brome-Missisquoi are shining light on the role that volunteerism plays in the community.
Chantal Renaud is the coordinator of volunteers at the Centre Action Bénévole Sutton (CAB Sutton). She told CIDI that the organization currently has 75 regular volunteers that help offer a number of important services to residents in Sutton and Abercorn. This includes Meals on Wheels for seniors, a homework assistance program at Sutton School, and the food bank.
