Federal government announces investments in semiconductor industry

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a $59.9 million federal investment on April 26 in Bromont to strengthen the domestic supply chain and to establish Canada as a global leader in the manufacturing of semiconductors. 

The investment will support projects from IBM Canada and MiQro Innovation Collaborative Centre (C2MI) to create more semiconductors – also commonly known as microchips.

At the press conference held at IBM, Trudeau stated to reporters that the investment will “support research into groundbreaking quantum technologies and add new manufacturing capacity and capabilities to IBM Canada’s packaging facility here in Bromont.”

The investment is expected to create 280 jobs in the Bromont area and allow IBM and C2MI to offer up to 240 co-op internship positions to foster innovation in semiconductor packaging and quantum technologies, which were described as essential for economic growth and the future of artificial intelligence.
