The Centre de Prévention du Suicide Haute-Yamaska Brome-Missisquoi is raising awareness around suicide prevention and the services it offers to the community with an upcoming event to mark World Suicide Prevention Day.

Taking place on September 8th, the event is all about bringing the community together through different therapeutic activities, such as yoga and art therapy, and to initiate important conversations around suicide prevention, said Anne Jutras, executive director of the Prevention Centre.

Jutras explained that prevention is all about ensuring that an individual has access to all of the resources and help they need to avoid developing suicidal thoughts. She added that an important part of prevention includes raising awareness amongst a person’s family about “what suicide really is and why people might get those thoughts.”

Jutras noted, however, that there is still a lot of "taboo" around speaking about suicide and the hope is that the event will help encourage people to open up and have these difficult discussions with their loved ones.
