A regional policy has been developed in the Eastern Townships to ensure the sustainability and viability of hiking trails in the region.
Initiated by trail management organization Les Sentiers de l’Estrie, the creation of the “Estrie Regional Hiking Trail Policy” involved consultations with various stakeholders, such as trail management groups, conservation organizations, political representatives, etc., to create a unified vision “that promotes access to nature and the well-being of the community,” said Georges Tessier, administrator and vice-chair of the board for Les Sentiers de l’Estrie.
There is growing awareness in Quebec, including at the government level, around “the importance of contact with nature, its preservation, and the benefits of physical activity,” noted Tessier, marking the right time for stakeholders to take on a collaborative effort to preserve hiking trails for the benefit of communities in the Eastern Townships.
CIDI interviewed Tessier and Christine Baron, general director of the Conseil Sport Loisir de l’Estrie - one of the partners in developing the policy - to learn more about the policy and how it will be implemented in the region.
