Paddle Brome Lake 2022
Renaissance Lac-Brome (RLB) is holding its Paddle Brome Lake event for a second year in a row. After launching the initiative last summer, RLB received a positive response from locals that wanted to see Paddle Brome Lake turn into an annual community event.
Paddle Brome Lake 2022 starts on Saturday, September 3 at 7 a.m. at Douglass Beach where participants can paddle, canoe, or kayak about 19 km of Brome Lake.
Transportation Issues ETSB
At the end of August, the Eastern Townships School Board (ETSB) sent out a letter explaining to parents that contract negotiations to ensure that students, particularly in the western sector of the ETSB, have access to bus transportation are still ongoing. The ETSB contracts independent carriers for the western sector of its territory while it serves the eastern sector with its own employees and buses.
Glen Moutain
For years, the Glen Mountain ski trail was an economic force for West Bolton and the Town of Brome Lake, where many people passed through, with bumper to bumper traffic coming from all directions. It holds a special spot in the memories of Townshippers’ and those that visited the area to specifically discover the special gem.
Knowlton Film Festival
The third edition of the Knowlton Film Festival officially kicked off on Aug. 25 with a crowd to show for it.
The evening started off with a cocktail hour before the viewing of the film Coda: Life with Music by Quebecois screenwriter Louis Godbout. Having directed his previous films, Coda was Godbout’s first screenplay and it officially premiered in Canadian theatres this summer after being put on the back burner by the pandemic.
Town Council Meeting
Two significant developments were made at the Town of Brome Lake’s most recent town council meeting on August 8. The town council passed a resolution to take part in a daycare pilot project launched by the provincial government. The pilot project involves setting up daycares in municipal buildings to address the challenge of accessing day care services in Quebec.
Protection Mont-Gale
Protection Mont-Gale, a citizens group in Bromont, with the help of conservation group Appalachian Corridor, have reached an agreement with the Town of Bromont and current owner of Balnea Spa Denis Laframboise that is expected to result in the conservation of 32 acres of land, land on which the spa currently stands, to be reintegrated back into the Domaine naturel du lac Gale.
Prohibition Trail
The CLD de Brome-Missisquoi is taking the public on trip back in time with its new “Brome-Missisquoi Prohibition Heritage Trail.” Stretching 130 km and passing through seven municipalities, the trail is an audio-guided tour that covers the history of the temperance and prohibition period in the region from 1848 and 1933.
Canadian Federation of University Women
In 1919, a group of university women in Toronto came together and formed the pan-Canadian federation the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW). CFUW promotes equality, education, learning, human rights, social justice, and fellowship for all women and girls at the local, national, and international level through advocacy work.
Les Minis du Lac Selby
Tucked away at the end of Wilkinson Road in Dunham lies a space dotted with colourful cottages. The cottages date back to the 1960s and they have passed through the hands of various owners before falling in the lap of partners Nancy, Michel, and Marc.
Le Rizen
Le Rizen, a farm located in Frelighsburg that is focused on producing organic asian vegetables, is holding an open house over Labor Day weekend. The open house is an opportunity for the public to discover the farm, a diverse selection of asian vegetables, to test them out, and to learn how to incorporate them in every day cooking.
Christian Vachon Foundation
Brome Lake residents, business owners, and organizations are joining forces and taking the pledge to support the Christian Vachon Foundation. The Christian Vachon Foundation is a non-profit organization based in Magog with a mission to support the educational success of vulnerable children.
Somaku’ officially published
Local author Maria Cordaro has officially published her first book Somaku’: Planetary Disruption of the 5th Dimension. It took Cordaro six years to bring her story to life, working on the sci-fi novel whenever she had a moment of free time, after being encouraged by her family to invite others into her imagination. While not originally an author, Cordaro took the leap and she now hopes to bring readers on a unique journey.
Knowlton Film Festival
The Knowlton Film Festival is getting set for its big comeback with its upcoming third edition running from August 24 to 28.
Put on hold for the last two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film festival invites directors, producers, artists, and others involved in the world of cinematography with the opportunity to present their work to festival-goers in a unique setting. The general public has the opportunity to connect with creators and to experience films outside of the typical movie theatre.
Abuse in sports
Hockey Canada has been under scrutiny over the last couple of months after information emerged that the national hockey body was involved in an out-of-court settlement for a sexual assault case involving hockey players from the 2018 junior hockey team.
After coming to light, Minister of Sports and Member of Parliament for Brome-Missisquoi Pascale St-Onge immediately cut federal funding to Hockey Canada.
Brome Lake Ducks rugby
After a two-year hiatus, the Brome Lake Ducks Rugby Football Club men’s rugby team is back in tip-top shape. Practicing and training together since March, the team is gearing up for a semi-final game on August 6 against its rivals the Ormstown Saracens.
Canadian Party of Quebec
Canadian Party of Quebec, a new political party in Quebec, officially launched at the end of June in Montreal for the upcoming 2022 provincial election. The political party was initiated by the Task Force on Linguistic Policy, a group that was formed about a year ago to inform the public about Bill-96, after certain members decided to branch off into the political realm.
Shop at Dusk
Tourisme Lac-Brome and the Town of Brome Lake have launched its first edition of Knowlton’s “Shop at Dusk” event. Shop at Dusk encourages residents and visitors to support the local economy by extending business hours until 8 p.m. and offering promotions in the boutiques. Tourisme Lac-Brome approached local merchants and 24 businesses decided to take part.
Project Caravane
Brome-Missisquoi is seeing a new spontaneous ride-sharing initiative called “Project Caravane.” Project Caravane is a citizens initiative that was formed a couple of years ago, but it was put on hold throughout the pandemic. The initiative involves setting up ride-sharing stops, similar to bus stops, at different hotspots throughout the region.
Music and Art Ukraine
Karen Kaderavek, acclaimed classical cellist, Scott Woolweaver, principal violinist for the Boston Pops, and David James, a local renowned sculptor, have joined forces in support of the Sutton Committee for Ukrainian Refugees. The Sutton Committee for Ukrainian Refugees was formed to help Ukrainian families coming to Sutton, and other parts of the Eastern Townships, integrate in their new communities. In collaboration with Association de la culture et du patrimoine d’Abercorn and Centre Culturel Abercorn, Music and Art Ukraine will be taking place at the little Anglican Church in Abercorn on August 7 in support of the committee’s initiatives.
