Women’s groups in Quebec are raising their concerns around the 2024-2025 budget following Minister of Finance Eric Girard’s budget speech on March 12.
Mona Louis-Jean, interim director at ConcertAction Femmes Estrie, told CIDI that while the budget focuses on reinvesting in health and education “there is nothing that is there specifically for women,” which reflects the need for further analysis around how the government’s decision making can impact women.
When it comes to policy making, it is “fundamental” for the government to apply a “gender-based analysis,” emphasized Louis-Jean, and start looking at its policies through a particular “lens” that takes into consideration not only the realities of women, but other vulnerable populations.
In response to the budget, a week of “social strikes and actions” has been organized that will mobilize women’s groups and community organizations across Quebec, said Annie-Pierre Bélanger, coordinator for Groupe des Treize.
(Editors note: CIDI reached out to Avante Women’s Centre for comment, but they declined to comment with us at this time. We are expected to follow-up at a later date).
